How to Use Silicone Cupping in your Self-Care Routine

Cupping therapy is a traditional treatment that creates negative pressure through localized suction. This negative pressure decompresses and gently lifts the skin and underlying tissues to stimulate blood circulation and promote pain relief for injuries such as strains, sprains and inflammation. It is best to avoid cupping if you are currently undergoing any cancer treatments, are in organ failure, have severe edema, have a pacemaker, have any bleeding disorder or history of blood clots, have weakened skin integrity, or are pregnant. We recommend starting with a light suction in order to decrease the risk of creating a new injury or worsening any pre-existing ones. If the cups become painful while in use, either decrease the amount of suction used or remove cups completely.

General Protocols

  • If you have any health conditions, please consult your doctor before use
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Do NOT use on orifices such as mouth, nose, eyes, or genitalia
  • Do NOT cup over varicose veins, open wounds, sores, blemishes, dermatitis, irritated or broken skin, rashes, fresh tattoos, psoriasis, eczema, sunburn, hernias, broken bones, slipped discs
  • If you feel light headed or nauseous – remove cup immediately
  • If you see bruising, bleeding, or blistering – remove cup immediately
  • Petechiae or sha is the result of blood flowing to the surface of the skin. If petechiae does occur, do not worry. This is a totally normal reaction and is temporary, lasting for a few days, up to two weeks.
  • Applying arnica after treatment can be helpful in reducing the appearance of petechiae.
  • Do not apply heat to the area immediately after.
  • Clean with hot water and dish soap. DO NOT put in boiling water or in the dishwasher.
  • Drink plenty of water.

Suggested Cupping Techniques

Static Cupping
Cups are applied and left in one spot. This technique is best suited for localized problems. You can use one or several cups for this technique.

Massage Cupping
Cups are slid or glided along the muscle while maintaining a light to moderate suction. You will need to use a lubricant such as jojoba oil with this technique.

Rotation Technique
Place your cup over an exceptionally difficult trigger point and maneuver it slowly from side to side or in a counterclockwise motion to encourage muscle relaxation.

Blanket Cupping
Looks crazy but feels amazing! Cover your problem area with as many cups as you’d like and leave them on for 3-5 minutes.
