How to use a Gua Sha Tool in your Self-care Routine

Gua sha is not painful and you can quickly feel relief with decreased tension and increased mobility. We recommend being gentle to avoid any petechiae, especially on areas of skin that are thinner. Petechiae or sha is the result of blood flowing to the surface of the skin. If petechiae does occur, do not worry. This is a totally normal reaction and is temporary lasting for a few days, up to two weeks.

Suggested Gua Sha for the Neck

  1. Feel the area for any muscle tension, stiffness, or knots.
  2. Apply Jojoba oil to the neck.
  3. Use the tool to scrape the side of the neck in long strokes reaching the shoulders.
  4. Scrape with light to moderate comfortable pressure starting from the side of the neck with long strokes and gradually reach the back of the neck.
  5. Continue scraping until the sha or petechiae appears.
  6. Repeat the whole process on the left side of the neck.
  7. Make sure to treat both sides as well as the back of your neck evenly for best results. Do not use it on the front of the neck.
  8. Massage the sides of the neck with long strokes of the palm in the same direction you applied the Gua Sha.

Tips

  • If you have any health conditions, please consult your doctor before use.
  • Gua Sha can also help relieve shoulder pain, knee pain, TMJD, headaches, and sinus pressure.
  • Stay on flesh and muscle, do not scrape over the spine or boney areas.
  • Applying arnica after treatment can be helpful in reducing the appearance of petechiae.
  • Do not apply heat to the area immediately after.
  • Clean your tool after each use with soap and water, do not share your tool with others.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Facial Gua Sha is more gentle. The goal is to promote skin toning, circulation and lymphatic drainage, not to bring about petechiae .
